So, I think it's safe to say that it is probably working correctly as your post got me thinking that it might be a hardware problem. I took the laptop apart today and sure enough one of the two headphone jacks is damaged. I will probably de-solder it this weekend and that should fix the problem. I stuck a spare hard drive in it and loaded windows and had the same problem, so it is definately the jack that is causing it. I got this laptop used and didn't have any reason to think that there would be any issues besides the cracked screen. Sorry to have wasted your time with this I should have checked. You can mark this however you need and even remove the report if you need to. Thanks for helping me figure it out!
