To re-enable the terminal bell on my ThinkPad X61 running Ubuntu 10.10 I took
the following actions suggested above:
* Un-blacklist pcspkr as described above, then either reboot or modprobe
pcspkr.
* On the terminal window, tick "Edit | Profile Preferences | General |
Terminal bell"
* Run gconf-editor and at "apps | metacity | general" tick audible_bell.
* Run gconf-editor and at "desktop | gnome | peripherals | keyboard" change
"bell_mode" from "off" to "on".
* Use the alsamixer program to unmute and raise Beep volume to a suitably
high level.
* Do pactl upload-sample /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/bell.ogg bell.ogg
