I was able to solve the problem by white-listing apport so that its 
notification icon is allowed to appear in the Unity notification area.  Classic 
still uses the old notification area, which is why there were no problems there.
Actually, I just white-listed everything (see 
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10650333#post10650333 #12) since I've 
never found (in 4-5 years of running Ubuntu) that my notification area got too 
cluttered.  I can now get update notifications as well (without running apt-get 
update) since the update notifier is also once again allowed to have its icon 
appear, and I don't believe I run any other program that uses the notification 
area by default.
