I can confirm this bug in both 10.04 and 10.10 (both Netbook Edition).

I can also confirm that marco's workaround for getting the battery-
indicator back by suspending to RAM (not hibernating) works.

What makes this bug particularly nasty is that Ubuntu really is
*completely* unaware that the system is running on battery and thus
happily chugs along until the system suddenly loses power, like pulling
the plug on a running system. Not fun.
