Unity required 3D support on the guest. For this to work you need
virtualbox-ose 4.0.4-dfsg-1ubuntu3 from the official Ubuntu repository
with virtualbox-ose-guest-x11 installed on the guest and 3D enabled for
that guest.
If you're using the version from Oracle you need 4.0.6.
I'm closing this report because it is not a bug with a package from
Ubuntu.
