Verified, but note that a from-source build of PIL 1.1.7 (downloaded
from the pythonware.com site) built in a virtualenv of Python 2.7 also
crashes in the same way with both Python 2.6 and 2.7.  Also PIL seems
pretty much unsupported upstream these days as the last release was Nov
2009.  This will no doubt be a fun one.
