Public bug reported:

NetworkManager Applet 0.8.1
Ubuntu 10.10

I have noticed that my network connection (over wireless) disconnects
randomly every second day or so. When this happens, nm-applet has
disappeared from the icons area.

This happens more often when I amn't in a wifi-zone, but it can happen
in the middle of a browsing session also.

Running nm-applet solves the problem. The icon reappears and networking
restarts.

However it is inconvenient.

I realize that this might not be enough information for you. Feel free
to ask me for more.
