This documentation <http://www.win-rar.com/index.php?id=24&kb=1&kb_article_id=162> mentions the part of the RAR header that actually describes the version necessary to decode it: > UNP_VER RAR version needed to extract file > 1 byte > Version number is encoded as > 10 * Major version + minor version. I have no idea what percentage of RAR files encoded these days are using 3.x and superior; if it's growing substantially, perhaps the documentation for p7zip should stress what version of RAR it supports to avoid the kind of confusion I encountered (and perhaps Igor's error messages should be more specific to mentioning format versions).
