That would make things better as one finds this out earlier but it is not my point.
To clear things up: I ran the update-manager two times. The first time I got the message that the space was not enough. Fine, I freed some space and ran the update-manager again. This second time no message appeared and the update-manager did it's thing. Apparently also this second time there was not enough space (as you found in the error) but the update-manager did start the upgrade with a broken system as a result.
