There must be something else; nmapplet works fine here, and shouldn't
even try to get into the notification area since it's patched to use
indicators instead.
Could you please try the following: create a new user and connect to it
in Unity, or use a guest session to effectively do the same. Does nm-
applet show up in this case? it should get started automatically. (You
might want to make sure no other copy of nm-applet is running first
though).
