I'm afraid that I can't do that since the machine is now host to
another distro which I'm reasonably happy with.  However this seems to
be a well known issue at Aurora OS.  See this forum page

Seems that ubiquity is set to install Grub to a non-existant MBR
location, in my case hd(0,0).  I set it to install on sda and the
install proceeded to completion.

If it is of interest Aurora was too bulky for my EeePC701 so I installed
eeepc 3.
