Ar2ro:

Since edgy, ubuntu is now using libata in place of drivers/ide etc,
this means the handling of ide drives has changed very significantly.
Handling of hdds and cds/dvds has become more integrated.

Please check out bug 103410 which may be more what you are
experiencing and for some kernel related xfermode error see

Cant help on the udev stuff unfortunately.
