I don't think the flashing is due to the fade animation at all. With no
fade effect it is still possible to see the white flashes. For some
reason, a blank surface is being created on opening a menu, only to be
destroyed and replaced with the actual menu - the fade effect only makes
it more obvious because it takes 50ms to complete, and disabling it
improves the appearance of the desktop, but this is just a workaround,
not the cause of the problem.
