Thanks! But I must say the init.d scripts should always work. The gnome/kde settings could instead of changing /etc/defaults/avahi-daemon, add or remove a symlink from init.d to rcX.d... It would mean support for one less file, and people wouldn't have to know about all these /defaults/ directories, it just adds a layer of knowledge one has to have to debug things. Keep it simple. Thanks for the solution anyway.
