Binary package hint: synaptic
when synaptic freezes, one can only close it by "Force Quit."
once exited it cannot be opened again.
attempting to use software-center:

Using Update Manager, clicking on "Check":
"Updating cache"
"Waiting for synaptic to exit"
Synaptic cannot be seen in SYSTEM MONITOR, so unable to shut it down.
so, one has to reboot, & then it works again, only to freeze up again at an
unknown time.
Could not find any logs that describe or shed light on this error.
Synaptic is superior to Software Center in loading massive amounts of
files.
It is an essential part of Ubuntu.
