I should add that I have since intalled gnome3, so I have no access to
unity anymore...

curiously enough, I have a similar problem in gnome3, but now some of the 
windows are black. 
Better said, if I open google chrome it is sometimes full black, but I can 
still click on the place where the button is to close it. If I resize the 
window, I might end up at a place where the window is in such a size that it's 
contents are visible again. If I resize PAST that size, it will becom black 
again. 

Sometimes, I just have to log out and in again, and the same program
will be ok.

This has happened with several programs, under gnome3

I am quite sure this is a driver problem, since this never happens in
gnome classic, which is not so resource intensive...
