Never mind. I reflashed the prior image again, and this time I moved the top status window over to the side of the screen. I did not close the drop-down terminal box. When I got back to the above setup, I was able to click the triangle, hide the terminal box and then click the underlying button.
I also fixed a problem with one partition mentioned in fstab not being there.
