This hack fixes the bug for me (in /etc/X11/xorg.conf):
Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
EndSection
Now the control keys work, the notification bubble works and even direct
control writing to /sys/class/backlight/mbp_backlight/brightness.
