Indeed! Inspiron 1546. (from all accounts the 1545 works perfectly)
Have been searching on and off for 2 months to see if there was a simple fix. 
I've seen almost 2 forum posts about this, and the only 'solution' was to go 
back to Ubuntu 10.04 and not ever upgrade the Kernel past 2.6.34~ if you want 
10.10+ you have to live without USB ports or webcam. It's been suggested that 
if you compile your own kernel that might do the trick, but don't know if 
anyone has actually done it.

I'm amazed that this isn't a more prevalent problem.

I don't have any out put to contribute, except that lsusb has no output.

Good to know I'm not alone though!
