Hi Trevor, it seems your mic input is muted:

Please correct using the gnome-volume-control, see 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/CheckForMutedMicrophone - if that is 
unsuccessful, use this terminal command:
alsamixer -D hw:U0x46d0x809
And press "M" to toggle whether it is muted or not. Please report back whether 
it solved your problem or not. Thanks!
