Doesn't the Ambiance theme specifically enable automatic mnemonics,
though? :)

This is still the case with any other widgets drawn in a GTK+ application, for 
example. Hold Alt and the mnemonics for the active window are all underlined. 
It could be argued that the effect makes them more learnable and more visible: 
it's immediately clear there is a relation between the keyboard and these 
underlined characters and the underlines are very easy to notice when they are 
triggered.
(They aren't just random underlined characters that stand in the way of looking 
pretty).

I should also mention that the underlines follow the active menu here,
as is ordinary when we have auto mnemonics and the menu is activated
using the keyboard. If you open a submenu, you can see that happening.
