I could, but I managed to fix it meanwhile - it seems it is not a rendering or other sw issue, just packaging. The packages unity-place- applications and unity-place-files were not installed during the upgrade to natty, as they are only recommended by unity, not required. I have installed them manually and now the dash works as expected.
