on my hardware, pressing the wifi button apparently DOES disable the
wireless connection, but does not generate a keypress event. (In order
to get network manager to work again, I had to toggle the "Enable
Wireless" option in Network Manager's panel applet menu.)

By contrast, the adjacent bluetooth button (which I believe is not
connected to a functional module) puts the following two lines into
dmesg:

released (translated set 2, code 0x84 on isa0060/serio0).
