The same bug was already fixed in the package in Debian unstable (see
Debian bug #375444) but not yet in the one in experimental.
BTW: I also tried rm -f. The package builds then but the *.la and *.a
are still there and then also in the package. Looking now at the diff.gz
in Debian unstable the maintainer also split .../*.{la,a} to .../*.la
and .../*.a
