Public bug reported:

I have nvidia-glx and linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-generic installed.
When I select nvidia as driver in xorg.conf it loads nv_drv instead and
my system hangs upon starting xorg. The screen goes blank and locks up.

Rebooting and selecting nv as driver works.

When I get an api mismatch through the bug here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-
modules-2.6.20/+bug/106217 it loads the nvidia driver fine, but of
course won't start because of the mismatch. After removing that
.nvidia_new_installed file it gives the lockup again and again loads the
nv_drv instead of the nvidia_drv.
