I got it to work on my Powerbook G4 Titanium with an ATI Mobility M3 AGP2x,
where I encountered similar issues:
* Ubuntu 7.0.4b would start, bring up the splash screen and finally show a
blank screen (the login sound worked though;)

This fixed the issue:
* manually edit the xorg.conf to include correct sync ranges for the LCD screen:
HorizSync 30-100
VertRefresh 50-160
* edit the Mode-lines to include the correct screen size of 1152x768

After that, the X desktop came up perfectly.

Now if only my Broadcom-based WLAN-card would work... (firmware is not
found and there is no end user help, just a console error message).
