The problem was fixed in the April 21st daily build. It appears this is a duplicate of bug 765270 .
On a related note, installing on the Samsung Series 9 with the above partition table results in a non-bootable system. The Series 9 uses the Sandy Bridge chipset, and is EFI. I had to manually specify a /boot/efi partition of type EFI before the installation would work. I can live with that; I bring it up because it might be a good idea to mention it in the 11.04 release notes.
