Just a note in case, like myself, anyone stumbles on this page. I was having very similar issues where I was getting "installer crashed" about 3/4 of the way through. Redownloading, re-burning, USB installs all failed. Finally, I loaded up the "Live" mode, disabled the viperlab repos Software Sources, reloaded the package info, and disconnected from the network. I then chose the "Install" option and did NOT check the Download Updates and Install Third Party options.
This time the install when fine.
