I have run GSmartControl on the hard drive in my Toshiba. It passes the basic health check.
When I check the attributes tab, I see none of the attributes have failed. All show "old age" as their "type" with the exception of three pre-failures: Raw Read Error Rate, Spin-up Time and Reallocated Sector Count. The error log tab shows 83 errors. The last five are all "interface CRC error, command aborted", except for one which is "[unknown type]". So today I will get a new hard drive and see if that helps my problem.
