Hi Bilal. Actually, as of yesterday, I've now got the latest Virtual Box
4.06 and it works! (4.04 was failing for me). Thanks for your response.

** Description changed:

+ Problem solved: bug turned out to be a virtual box issue.
+
I have it set to auto-login and I hear the Ubuntu login sound (drums)
but the GUI does not load. Prior to latest updates it was fine (ie beta
2 was fine). Formerly it would take a while and display a black screen
and then show the GUI (Unity). Now nothing.

The mouse cursor works but I'm not sure if that's the cursor within the
virtual machine or my regular 10.10 one.

I tried installing Nvidia proprietary drivers but the system didn't seem
to be able to use them. 'Additional Drivers' didn't find them, so I
installed via terminal. Only Unity-2d would boot after that. Upon
removing those drivers and reinstalling nouveau I was back to the blank
  screen.

- version: 11.04 Natty beta 2 (32-bit) + latest updates
+ version: 11.04 Natty beta 2 (32-bit) + latest updates
graphics: NVidia 7600GT with default driver (Nouveau?)
other: running in VirtualBox (worked till latest update)
