Binary package hint: gnome-session
Since Maverick, gnome-session has changed the names of the default GNOME
sessions to refer specifically to Ubuntu. This requires downstream
distros based on Ubuntu to fork the gnome-session package simply to
remove the Ubuntu branding.
I suggest going back to the old method of making the session names
distro-neutral. Barring that, a "postinst" script in the debian package
could autogenerate the entries after the package is installed based on
the current distro name listed in /etc/lsb-release.
The entries in question are located in /usr/share/xsessions, and are
simply standard .desktop files. Changing their names updates the entry
in the GDM greeter and the Login admin app, and appears to have no ill-
effects regarding the functionality of the actual sessions.
