Public bug reported:

Feisty Fawn makes DVDs into coasters. Regularly.

I've come across this before. I was playing with Arch, also running
kernel 2.6.20, and had exactly the same problem ; burning was (almost)
impossible.

It's not a hardware fault though ; I *think* it is a Kernel bug or
possibly a problem in the interface between cdrecord/growisofs and the
kernel.

In Arch Linux you can tweak the kernel so that it uses the old PIIX
modules and the old IDE interface rather than the new one by changing a
control file ; it doesn't rebuild it so much as reorganise it.

The most obvious symptom of the change to the new drivers is that
optical drives shift from /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd to /dev/sr0 and
/dev/sr1.

Restoring the old drivers returns my twin writers to /dev/hdc and
/dev/hdd and they then work fine.
