Some more information. I noticed messages like the following in my
/var/log/dist-upgrade/term.log (the X and Y are just some version
numbers from the kernel, but it seemed to be overall universal so i
omitted the specific ones):
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.X-Y-generic
cp: cannot state `/etc/udev/rules.d/05-options.rules': No such file or directory
cp: cannot state `/etc/udev/rules.d/85-brltty.rules': No such file or
directory
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
You shouldn't call /sbin/update-grub. Please call /usr/sbin/update-grub instead!
1. /usr/share/doc/grub/NEWS.Debian.gz
file and follow its instructions.
Your /etc/kernel-img.conf needs to be updated. Read grub's NEWS.Debian[1]
Running postinst hook script /sbin/update-grub.
cp: cannot state `/etc/udev/rules.d/05-options.rules': No such file or directory
cp: cannot state `/etc/udev/rules.d/85-brltty.rules': No such file or directory
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-11-generic
Running depmod.
After I reboot, I get almost what I did when trying to boot the cd:
Starting up...
Loading, please wait...
[ 35.998671] ata5.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x4)
....(similar ones repeat about 5 times)...
Check root= bootarg cat /prov/cmdline
or midding modules, devices: cat /proc/modules ls /dev
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/40c43667-f776-4843-8e5d-b69ac3628546 does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!
>From here on I get exactly what I got when trying to boot the CD (the
BusyBox stuff I posted above.
