It is possible that the module loads and freezes the system before the disk is mounted read/write. You can try booting with the "radeon.nonsense=1" option, then at the console (ctrl-alt-f1): sudo stop gdm sudo modprobe radeon and see if you now get anything logged. If still not, it might seem that it crashes the system immediately so nothing can get written to disk.
