I have found a way to make the graphical screen appear on boot.   In my
case I removed one of my RAID 1 disks that is used for my home directory
mount point.  This gave me the attached screen shot to drop to a
recovery console. After exiting the recovery console after starting the
degraded array, the graphical boot screen appeared as it should followed
by the login screen.
