I'm having the same problems (X1600 on an HP Compaq nc8430) but when I run X under gdb I get a blank screen and can't seem to switch back to the gdb console to get the backtrace. The best I can do is Ctrl-Alt-Del, which kills X and gets me back to the consoles but then of course everything shuts down :-(
