It might be a separate issue, but it doesn't seem coincidence that I had never 
seen that message (udevd-work[xxx]: open /dev/null failed: no such file or 
directory) before, and when it did start appearing, I could not boot Ubuntu at 
all, for good. I was able to boot Windows 7 in the other partition though.

Just because Ubuntu 11.04 was out yesterday, I downloaded it and
upgraded. The problem was pissing me off...

I hope Canonical can fix this problem. Certainly this kind of issues
scare windows-like users. I've been with Ubuntu for years, but that
isn't necessarily the general case.
