Same problem here, exactly. Editing xorg.conf in recovery shell changing
"fglrx" to "ati" didn't help either.
Temporary fixed by removing fglrx, xorg and xserver-xorg-video-ati, changing
xorg.conf to xorg.conf.old and then reinstalling xorg and
xserver-xorg-video-ati.
It worked, but not perfectly. No Compiz, color contrast sharply decreased, some
problems with standard Ubuntu effects. Well, yet it's working... God, I was
much better with fglrx. Tryed to install it again through "Additional Drivers",
but got xorg segmentation fault one more time.
Please fix it *crying*
Gor a rare radeon HD 4570... it seemes nothing works properly with it except
fglrx.
May be, the problem is in fglrx package? Doing aticonfig --initial I got a
message about missing lib libglx.so too, but it isn't missing, it can be found
in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions.
