@Herton, Thanks for your help. At least i am beginning to understand the nature of my issues now. I seem to have several problems with this machine (A brand new laptop with Sandy Bridge, Hybrid Graphics w/Optimus that cannot be disabled from bios) It will take some time and effort to disentangle the symptoms and connect them to their individual causes. I feel like i am one step in that direction, so thanks again.
