Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

This problem started when the automatic upgrade to 11.04 broke my
system. I had Xubuntu, Kubuntu, and Ubuntu desktops installed. After the
upgrade manager downloaded and installed the upgrade, I rebooted. The
system never was able to fully boot any of my installed desktops. So, I
init 1 > aptitude > removed all my desktops, then removed all session
and user config files from ~/ and reinstalled the Xubuntu Desktop, which
I am now using to report this problem.

I suspect doing a fresh install of the users Desktop(s) and
cleaning/backing up the config/session for the upgrade just might fix
this problem, then having an "import old config" utility available would
be good too.
