This is a duplicate of bug #681294 which I can not reopen...
The system boots correctly but X doesn't start. The screen changes from
'Aubergine' to completely 'black' when switching from plymouth to gdm.
The system isn't completely dead but it's not possible to switch to a
console.
Atom processor systems seem to be primarily affected.
I had this issue now an then since 10.10 or 10.04 but after shutting down the
system and starting it again ubuntu always managed to start correctly again.
This is not the case anymore. I had to use the workaround explained in a
#681294 comment to be able to log into gnome and report this bug.
