Since reporting this bug I havn't been able to reproduce the problem. I've done in the order of 50 suspend/resumes without any problems. During this time I've run with the same kernel version but might have upgraded other packages.
Unfortunately I can't test this issue on Maverick anymore since I've upgraded to Natty.
