I tried to do what David said about the "Analog mix" setting, and did
not find one in my alsamixer. However, when I played with the "Mic
boost" setting, I noticed that it doesn't correspond correctly to the
setting in the "Sound preferences" GUI menu.

When you lower it all the way down and get it back up to 100 in the
alsamixer, the "Input volume" slider in the sound preferences GUI
doesn't go all the way to 100%, but stays somewhere near 25%. And in
this setting the microphone works perfectly with no background sounds at
all - I have just tested it with my colleague over skype.
