I think we may be able to invalidate this one if it's OK with you. The system needed the proprietary nVidia drivers, and those require the nVidia config tool to do anything at all with the external ports. I don't know that we can do anything to change that.
So I'm going to suggest that using the nvidia tool is the proper path to using external video on systems that require the nVidia drivers.
