I don't know how or why it worked this time, but after numerous reboots and tinkering and already trying this and giving up and trying it again:
sudo apt-get remove samba removed samba 4. I'd like to get 3 back, but I'm a little scared and I don't know how to get only 3 without touching Alpha 4.
