I am running:

Release 10.04 (lucid)
Kernel Linux 2.6.32-31-generic
GNOME 2.30.2

As this is my work laptop (the one I use to earn a living) it's risky
for me to change releases - and that's the reason I have an LTS version
loaded.

That said, I can try if I can get a lot of hand-holding. Which kernels
are of interest?

It's (the touchpad) is completely dead right now, even when the laptop
is plugged into the wall. If I were a guessing person, I might guess
that the initialization string gets sent too early, and it never gets
resent. Is there a way to force the driver to re-initialize without re-
loading?
