"1- after clicking "Other" to select the ISO image, double-check that it's selected in the Source list" Make sure I selected the kubuntu .iso I just downloaded for the sixth time from the kubuntu DL link - and not some animated .gif with a blinking K? Check. "2- make sure you're actually trying to install a bootable Ubuntu image" See above.
