Reason install-process failed:
/dev/sda1 mounted on /boot had to little room for the new files. (I have a
separate partition for /boot)

Solved by:
1. free some disk space by removing old images.
2. booted via 'submenu "Previous Linux versions"' into old version.
3. at this point (I believe?!) the install-process finished.
4. rebooted (without further problems).

Thank you for your attention.
Sorry for the noise.
If there is a need, I can still upload a new gzip.

(This was my first report. I do not know what status I should change
this report into.)

Additional info 1:
To my knowledge there is no check on available disk space for /boot. After
discovering the reason of the failed installation I remembered that it had
happened to me before.

Additional info 2:
After upgrading to 11.04, I was (apparently) able to use the computer normally.
Than digiKam hung. I had to do a 'hard reset'. Than I was no longer able to
boot (other than 'submenu "Previous Linux versions"'). Even the "(recovery
mode)" failed: When the recovery-menu appeared the keyboard was dead. After a
approximately 10 sec. the screen went blue and I had to 'hard reset' again.
