Hi all,
I was able to install the current pae kernel eventually. After a few attempts
at purging the kernel packages then reinstalling and attempting to reconfigure,
I had to remove nvidia-common. Here is some relevant output:

I still have occasional problems with the laptop not shutting down all
the way. Shutdown hangs with a black screen.
