The machine has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor.

Installation hangs at different spots during various attempts at
installing the software.

1. a blank screen with blinking cursor at the top left corner, before
the purple screen with keyboard layout and assistive technology symbols
at the bottom of the screen.

a hard boot is required to shut down the system.

2.  "kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(8,1)

then the next 12 instructions are ran and hangs at

[<c100367e>] ? kernel_thread_helper+0x6/0x10

a hard boot is required to shut down the system.
